Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 22, 2026
Famally ("we," "our," or "us") operates gofamally.com and the Famally app (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. By using Famally, you agree to the practices described below.
1. Information We Collect
Account information. When you register we collect your name, email address, and a hashed password. If you sign in with Google, Apple, or Microsoft we receive your name and email from that provider — we never see your Google, Apple, or Microsoft password.
Content you create. Recipes, grocery lists, pantry items, meal plans, family calendar events, chore assignments, budget entries, and any other data you add to the app are stored on our servers so they are available across your devices.
Family member data. If you invite family members, we store their names, email addresses, and the content they add to your shared household.
Receipt and coupon images. When you scan a receipt or coupon the image is sent to an AI model (Claude by Anthropic) to extract text. We store the extracted data (items, prices) but do not permanently store the raw image.
Calendar integration. If you connect Google Calendar or iCloud we store OAuth tokens (Google) or encrypted credentials (iCloud) to read and write calendar events on your behalf. We access only the calendar data needed to display and sync events inside Famally.
Usage data. We collect basic server logs (IP address, pages visited, timestamps) to operate and debug the service. We use Sentry for crash reporting and performance monitoring; Sentry receives error reports and basic device/browser metadata but no message content. We do not use third-party advertising trackers.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide, maintain, and improve the Famally app.
- To power AI features — your prompts and relevant context (pantry items, saved recipes, etc.) are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses. Anthropic's privacy policy governs how they handle that data.
- To sync your events to and from connected external calendars (Google Calendar, iCloud).
- To send transactional emails (password resets, account notifications). We do not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.
- To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data to train AI models.
3. Sharing Your Information
We share data with third parties only as necessary to operate the Service:
- Anthropic — receives the text of your AI assistant conversations and relevant household context to generate responses.
- Google / Apple / Microsoft — if you sign in with one of these providers or connect an external calendar, we exchange authentication and event data with those services, governed by your agreement with that provider.
- Sentry — receives crash reports and performance data, with sensitive content masked client-side before transmission.
- Stripe — processes subscription payments. We never see or store your full card number.
- Hosting and infrastructure providers — our servers and database run on cloud infrastructure whose providers have server-level access but are contractually bound to confidentiality.
- Law enforcement — we may disclose data when required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Famally, our users, or the public.
4. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account we permanently delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
5. Security
All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and never stored in plain text. OAuth tokens and third-party credentials are stored encrypted at rest. We apply industry-standard security practices, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
6. Your Rights and Choices
- Access and export. You can view all your data within the app at any time.
- Correction. You can update your name, email, and other profile information in Settings.
- Deletion. You can delete your account in Settings → Account → Delete Account. This permanently removes all your data.
- Disconnect integrations. You can disconnect Google Calendar or iCloud at any time in the Connected Calendars settings. This revokes our access and deletes the stored tokens.
- Contact us. Email [email protected] with any privacy questions or requests.
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA) or California you may have additional rights under GDPR or CCPA. Contact us at the address below to exercise them.
7. Children's Privacy
Famally is designed for families and may be used by children under parental supervision. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Cookies and Local Storage
We use browser local storage to remember your preferences (e.g., last selected grocery list) and to keep you signed in via a secure authentication token. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
9. Google API Services User Data Policy
Famally's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs (Sign in with Google, Google Calendar integration) adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Specifically:
- We use Google account information (name and email) solely to create and authenticate your Famally account.
- We use Google Calendar data solely to display and sync events you've connected through the app.
- We do not transfer Google user data to others except as necessary to provide the Service, comply with applicable law, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or asset sale (in which case users will be notified).
- We do not use Google user data for advertising purposes.
- We do not allow humans to read Google user data unless we have your affirmative agreement for specific data, it is necessary for security purposes (such as investigating abuse), to comply with applicable law, or for internal operations and only when the data has been aggregated and anonymized.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting a notice in the app or by email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
